AI is moving beyond prompts

Microsoft launches Scout, OpenAI expands Codex, and why the future belongs to people building systems not prompts.

Adam here.

This week inside AI Systems Lab, we worked on building your own digital brain.

The idea is simple: your thinking shouldn't live inside ChatGPT, Claude, or any single AI tool. Models come and go. Your systems, workflows and knowledge should stay with you.

AI Systems Lab: Create Your Own Digital Brain

What's interesting is how much of this week's news points in the same direction. Microsoft is launching AI agents that work across your files and meetings, OpenAI is pushing Codex beyond developers, and new research shows people are leaning on AI to make decisions, not just generate content.

Let's jump in.

MICROSOFT

Microsoft Introduces Scout, an AI Agent That Works in the Background

Microsoft has unveiled Scout, its first "Autopilot" agent designed to work across Microsoft 365. Unlike traditional AI assistants that wait for instructions, Scout can proactively coordinate meetings, identify upcoming tasks, flag risks, and help keep work moving throughout the day.

Scout connects with Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint and other Microsoft tools, giving it access to the information needed to support daily work. Microsoft says the goal is to reduce the coordination work that often consumes time between meetings, emails and projects.

Most AI tools still rely on users constantly prompting them. Microsoft's vision is different: AI agents that remain active in the background and help move work forward even when you're focused elsewhere.

Gemini Omni Lets You Edit Videos Through Conversation

Google has introduced Gemini Omni, a new model that combines Gemini's reasoning abilities with video creation and editing.

Users can upload video, images, audio and text, then make changes simply by describing what they want. Gemini Omni remembers previous edits, helping maintain consistency across characters, scenes and visual styles as projects evolve.

If you have access to Gemini Omni through Google AI subscriptions, try uploading an existing video and asking Gemini to make simple edits using natural language. You can change objects, environments, camera angles and visual styles without using traditional editing tools.

OPENAI

OpenAI Expands Codex Beyond Software Development

OpenAI has announced major updates to Codex, expanding the platform beyond coding into areas like marketing, sales, analytics, design and research.

New role-specific plugins connect Codex with popular workplace tools, allowing teams to create reports, prepare presentations, analyse data, develop creative assets and streamline workflows from a single interface.

This is one of the clearest signs that AI assistants are evolving beyond technical users. OpenAI is positioning Codex as a work assistant that can support entire teams, not just developers.

MICROSOFT WORK TREND INDEX

AI Is Becoming a Decision-Making Tool, Not Just a Productivity Tool

Microsoft's 2026 Work Trend Index found that nearly half of AI activity now supports analysing information, solving problems and making decisions. In fact, decision-making alone accounted for 28% of AI-related work, making it the largest use case measured.

The report also found that workers are increasingly using AI to support higher-value work rather than simply generating content or automating routine tasks. According to Microsoft's research, 66% of AI users say AI allows them to spend more time on high-value work.

The conversation around AI often focuses on efficiency. Microsoft's latest data suggests many people are now using AI as a thinking partner to analyse information, evaluate options and make better decisions.
